Introduction: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is common worldwide and is characterized by abnormal accumulation of fat in the liver. The aim of the present study was to determine the effect of interval training and omega-3 on the expression of BAX, BCL-2, and the BCL2/Bax ratio in liver tissue of rats with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.
Methods: In this laboratory study, 40 male Wistar rats (weight 156.98 ± 7.82 g) were divided into five groups: control-healthy (CN), patient (NAFLD), patient-exercise (TRNAF), patient -supplement (SUPNAF) and patient-exercise-supplement (TRSUPNAF) were included. The supplement groups received 1 gram of omega-3 (per kilogram of body weight) orally during the intervention period. The interval training program included running on a treadmill at a speed of 14-28 meters per minute, five days a week for eight weeks. 48 hours after the research protocol, gene expression levels in liver tissue were measured using Real-time PCR. Finally, to compare the mean changes of the research variables, one-way analysis of variance and Tukey's post hoc test were used at a significance level of P<0.05.
Results: Induction of NAFLD increased BAX expression and BAX/BCL2 ratio and decreased BCL2 expression (P=0.0001). Also, there was a significant decrease in BAX expression and BAX/BCL2 ratio in TRNAF (P=0.021 and P=0.0001 respectively), SUPNAF (P=0.033 and P=0.0001 respectively) and TRSUPNAF (P=0.0001 respectively) groups. = and P=0.0001) compared to NAFLD was observed. BCL2 expression was increased in TRNAF (P=0.029), SUPNAF (P=0.032) and TRSUPNAF (P=0.0001) groups compared to NAFLD.
Conclusions: The results of the present research are another confirmation of the decrease in apoptosis and increase in the survival of healthy cells in the liver tissue of rats following exercise and omega-3 consumption.
