Introduction: Sexual abuse is one of the traumatic experiences of adolescence that has profound impacts on stress coping styles. This study aimed to compare the effectiveness of psychological debriefing and schema therapy interventions on stress coping styles in female adolescents affected by sexual abuse.
Methods: This quasi-experimental study, utilizing a pretest-posttest control group design, was conducted on 45 female adolescents referred to the Varamin Social Emergency Center in 2024. Participants were randomly assigned to three groups (psychological debriefing, schema therapy, and control). The research instrument was the Coping Inventory for Stressful Situations (CISS) developed by Endler and Parker (1990). Data were analyzed using mixed-design analysis of variance (mixed ANOVA).
Results: The results indicated that the interventions (psychological debriefing and schema therapy) in the experimental groups led to a significant increase in the task-oriented (problem-focused) coping style, as well as a decrease in emotion-oriented and avoidance coping styles in the affected female adolescents from the pretest to the posttest stage. In contrast, no significant difference was observed in the data trend of the control group participants between the pretest and posttest phases.
Conclusion: The findings suggest that both interventions are effective, and no significant difference was found between the two approaches. It is suggested to utilize a combination of these two methods in the form of a phased protocol as an optimal strategy for this population.
