Introduction: The aim of the present study was to investigate the immediate effects of supportive taping on knee muscle electromyographic activity during walking in patients with non-specific low back pain.
Methods:  This study was a quasi-experimental and laboratory-based research. The statistical sample consisted of 20 patients without taping and 20 patients with taping, all suffering from non-specific low back pain, who voluntarily and purposefully participated in the study. Muscle activity during walking was recorded using an 8-channel electromyography device with surface electrodes. For the analysis of the electromyography data, Biometrics DataLITE software and a 10-450 Hz band-pass filter were used. A two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used for statistical analysis at a significance level of p < 0.05.

Results:  The median frequency of the gastrocnemius muscle during the pre-test propulsion phase showed a significant difference between the control and experimental groups (p=0.014). Taping led to an increase in the median frequency of the tibialis anterior muscle during the loading response phase (p=0.032, d=0.192). Additionally, the interaction effect of taping and group significantly increased the median frequency of the tibialis anterior muscle during the loading response phase (p=0.033, d=0.190). Furthermore, taping significantly increased the median frequency of the tibialis anterior (p=0.025, d=0.208) and rectus femoris (p=0.016, d=0.236) muscles during the propulsion phase.

Conclusion: Based on the results of this study, kinesio taping can be used as an effective method to assist patients with non-specific low back pain. Furthermore, this method, by optimizing muscle function in the lower limbs, reduces the probability of injury during the walking phase and increases stability.
