Background : Aging is associated with type 2 diabetes, a gradual decrease in muscle mass and strength. The severity of muscle weakness is likely to be related to the deterioration of biomarkers. The aim of the present study was to investigate the relationship between muscular fitness and metabolic and inflammatory markers in elderly diabetics.
Methods: 52 elderly diabetic women (72±5.5 y) were selected through voluntary response sampling and collectively assigned to a single research group, with varying levels of physical activity (inactive: n=11; moderately active: n=28; active: n=13). Handgrip strength (HGS), arm curl test (ACT), chair stand test (CST), muscle fitness score, and serum levels of glycemic indices, lipid profile, galectin-3(GAL-3), TNF-α, GDF-8 and adiponectin were measured. Pearson and Spearman correlation coefficients were used to determine the relationship between variables (p ≤ 0.05).
Findings: There was an inverse correlation between muscle fitness with WC(r = -0.288 and p = 0.04) and WHR(r = -0.378 and p = 0.007), HGS with HbA1c(r = -0.441 and p = 0.003), FBS(r = -0.312 and p = 0.03) and GAL-3(r = -0.349 and p = 0.02), ACT with TNF-α(r = -0.363 and p = 0.02), and a positive correlation between muscle fitness with adiponectin(r = 0.282 and p = 0.04), CST with adiponectin(r = 0.483 and p˂0.001), HGS with HDL(r = 0.283 and p = 0.05). While, there was no significant correlation between muscular strength and the physical fitness score with GDF-8 (p˃0.05).
Conclusions: It seems that improving muscular fitness is associated with improving body composition, inflammatory markers, and increased adiponectin in elderly diabetic women, but it alone cannot be a good predictor of all aspects of health in diabetic patients, and probably other aspects of fitness, such as cardiovascular fitness, should also be considered.
